The general rules of this game also apply here. Your task is to match two identical stones with every move. The only restriction is that a stone has to be free in order to be removed from the board. And a stone is only considered free, if it is not blocked by another stone on the left and right side directly adjacent to it. If the left or right side - or both of course - are empty, then this stone can be matched with another identical one.

So Mahjong Solitaire is played vertically for lack of a better explanation. Stones are stacked on top of each other. As you progress you will free up more and more stones that had been covered before. This way you will sooner or later free the playing field of all tiles. Then a level is finished.

Sometimes there seems to be no available stone left. This is where the shuffle and hint options come in very handy. Tapping on shuffle will mix the stones in a new order and offer new opportunities, while using the hint button visualizes an available match on the deck.

But be cautious with those two buttons, as both of them will cost you points. If you're aiming for a high score you should probably avoid them at all costs.
